How it all began
The British Film Club of Trieste was founded in October 1966 by Patricia Coales, a diminutive but intrepid Englishwoman who arrived in Trieste when the city was still under the Allied Military Government. Like many of her fellow-countrymen, she began by teaching at the Berlitz School, and then went up to Opicina to teach English for the Red Cross in the refugee camps, to the many displaced persons from Eastern Europe who found brief refuge in Trieste before emigrating to make a new life for themselves.
She then became one of the first teachers at the newly-opened School for Translators and Interpreters, where she remained until her retirement in 1991.
Frustrated by the lack of availability of English-language films, she decided in 1966 to set up a club to show British films with the original soundtrack. The first season attracted 400 members – membership cost 2000 lire – and the 9 films were shown from October to June in the cinema of C.I.F.A.P in Piazza Valmaura.
Since then, the BFC has become an integral part of Trieste’s cultural life for all lovers of the English language. We are proud of its history and of the good reputation it enjoys. Long may it continue!
Come è iniziata
Il British Film Club di Trieste fu fondato nell’ottobre del 1966 da Patricia Coales, una donna inglese piccola ma intrepida, che è arrivata a Trieste quando la citta era ancora amministrata dal Governo Militare Alleato. Come tanti suoi connazionali, ha iniziato insegnando alla Berlitz School, per poi passare ad insegnare l’inglese per la Croce Rossa a Opicina nei campi profughi, ai tanti sfollati dall’Europa orientale che hanno trovato un breve rifugio a Trieste prima di andare all’estero per rifarsi una nuova vita.
E’ diventata poi una delle prime insegnanti nella nuova Scuola per Traduttori e Interpreti, dove è rimasta fino al pensionamento nel 1991.
Frustrata dalla mancanza di disponibilità di film in inglese, nel 1996 ha deciso di fondare un’associazione per mostrare film britannici in versione originale. La prima stagione ha attirato 400 iscritti – costo della tessera 2000 lire – e i 9 film venivano proiettati da ottobre a giugno nel cinema del C.I.F.A.P. in Piazza Valmaura.
D’allora, il BFC è diventato parte integrale della vita culturale triestina per tutti gli amanti della lingua inglese. Noi siamo orgogliosi della sua storia, e della buona reputazione di cui gode. Lunga vita al BFC!
Today
How the story goes on
After Patricia’s death in 2004, the British Film Club found another Englishwoman to take over as its President: Judy Moss, who has also adopted Trieste as her home, and loves to sing its praises to visitors.
Since that time, the BFC has acquired a lovely clubhouse in Via Crociferi 3, at street-level, where our members are always welcome to drop by for a chat in English and a cup of tea (or something stronger!).
Whenever you see the door open, just come in!

Dopo la morte di Patricia nel 2004, il British Film Club ha trovato un’altra capitana che portasse avanti la tradizione: da allora la nostra Presidente è Judy Moss.
Anche Judy, come Patricia, ha adottato ed è stata adottata da Trieste, città che ama e della quale adora cantare le lodi ai visitatori.
Dal 2004 il BFC ha acquistato una sede bella e accogliente al pianoterra di Via Crociferi 3 dove i soci sono sempre benvenuti: passate pure per fare una chiacchierata in inglese e bere una tazza di tè (o anche qualcosa di più forte!)
Se vedete la saracinesca alzata non indugiate: entrate pure e sarete sempre accolti con un sorriso!
